The Power of "Close Enough": Why We Estimate
1. The Rounding Rule
To round a number, look at the digit to the right of your target place value. Remember the classic rhyme:
"4 or less, let it rest. 5 or more, let it soar!"
For example, 43 rests at 40, but 47 soars to 50.
2. Real-World Math
When you're at the grocery store figuring out if you have enough money, you don't calculate pennies! You estimate. If a toy is $9.95 and a snack is $2.10, you can quickly estimate $10 + $2 = $12.
3. Checking Your Work
Estimation is a superpower for double-checking exact math. If you calculate 48 + 53 and get 200, estimation tells you (50 + 50 = 100) that something went wrong! It helps catch silly mistakes.
