The "Over 1" Trick
Did you know that any number can be written as a fraction? You just put it over the number 1! For example, $0.75$ is the exact same thing as $\frac{0.75}{1}$.
While that is technically a fraction, math teachers don't like decimals mixed inside fractions. We need to use multiplication to get rid of the decimal point!
The Power of 10
To remove the decimal point, we look at how many "jumps" it takes to get to the end of the number.
- 1 Jump (e.g., $0.5$): Multiply top and bottom by 10
- 2 Jumps (e.g., $0.75$): Multiply top and bottom by 100
- 3 Jumps (e.g., $0.125$): Multiply top and bottom by 1,000
The Conversion Steps in Detail
1 Set Up
Write down the decimal divided by 1. This gives us our starting point to do our multiplication magic.
2 Multiply
Count the decimal places. Multiply both the top and bottom numbers by 10, 100, or 1000 to slide the decimal point completely away.
3 Simplify
Find the Greatest Common Divisor (GCD). Divide the top and bottom by this number to shrink the fraction into its simplest form.
