Understanding the Number Line
Zero is the Mirror
Think of the number line like a long street, and Zero (0) is your house in the exact middle.
- Positive Numbers live to the right. They are greater than zero.
- Negative Numbers live to the left. They have a minus sign (-) and are less than zero.
The Golden Rules of Movement
When doing math on a number line, simply follow the signs:
Addition (+) means jump RIGHT.
The number gets bigger.
Subtraction (-) means jump LEFT.
The number gets smaller.
Real Life Examples of Negative Numbers
Negative numbers aren't just for math class—they exist all around us!
Temperature
When it gets really cold, the temperature drops below zero (e.g., -5°C). That means freezing!
Sea Level
The surface of the ocean is 0. If a submarine dives underwater, its depth is measured in negative meters.
Money & Debt
If you have 0 dollars, but you owe your friend 10 dollars, your bank account is technically at -$10.
