Understanding the Parts of a Fraction

The Numerator (Top Number)

The top number is called the Numerator. It tells us how many pieces of the whole we actually have (or how many pieces are colored in).

Think of it as the "Number of slices I get to eat!"

The Denominator (Bottom Number)

The bottom number is called the Denominator. It tells us how many equal pieces the whole shape was sliced into.

Think of it as the "Total slices in the whole box."

Proper vs. Improper Fractions

Proper Fractions

When the top number is smaller than the bottom number (like 3/4). This means you have less than one whole pizza.

Num < Den

Improper Fractions

When the top number is larger than the bottom number (like 5/3). This means you have more than one whole pizza! You'll need extra boxes to hold all your slices.
