Understanding Temperature Scales

Celsius (°C)

The Celsius scale (formerly known as centigrade) is part of the metric system and is used by almost every country in the world! It is a very easy scale to remember because it is based around water:

  • 0 °C = The temperature where water freezes into ice.
  • 100 °C = The temperature where water boils into steam.

Fahrenheit (°F)

The Fahrenheit scale is used primarily in the United States. It was invented in 1724 by a physicist named Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit. The numbers on this scale are a bit different:

  • 32 °F = The temperature where water freezes.
  • 212 °F = The temperature where water boils.

The Conversion Formulas

Because the two scales don't start at the same zero point, and their "degrees" are different sizes, we have to use multiplication and addition to convert them!

Celsius to Fahrenheit

F = (C × 1.8) + 32

First, multiply the Celsius temp by 1.8. Then, add 32!

Fahrenheit to Celsius

C = (F - 32) ÷ 1.8

First, subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit temp. Then, divide by 1.8!

* Note: Many textbooks write 1.8 as the fraction 9/5. They are the exact same number!
