Mastering Roman Numerals
Thousands of years ago, the ancient Romans didn't use the numbers (0, 1, 2, 3...) that we use today. Instead, they used letters from their alphabet to count and do math!
The 7 Basic Symbols
There are only seven letters you need to memorize. Every other number is made by combining these letters together!
| Roman Symbol | Our Number |
|---|---|
| I | 1 |
| V | 5 |
| X | 10 |
| L | 50 |
| C | 100 |
| D | 500 |
| M | 1000 |
The Golden Rules
-
1. The Additive Rule
When a smaller symbol comes after a larger symbol, you add them together.
VI = 5 + 1 = 6 -
2. The Subtractive Rule
When a smaller symbol comes before a larger symbol, you subtract it.
IV = 5 - 1 = 4 - 3. The Rule of Three You can never put more than three of the exact same symbols in a row. For example, 4 is IV, not IIII.
